The best beaches in Portugal
If there’s one thing that Portugal has, it’s beaches. Not just any beaches though, but really beautiful ones with white sand and crystal clear water, just like the ones you see on postcards. Tourism in Portugal has boomed in recent years and people have fallen in love with the capital city Lisbon. But if you’re looking for a beach vacation where you can relax, or even surf, there’s plenty of them spread around Portugal. Let’s take a look at some of the best available beaches.
Praia da Ursa
Sintra is only about a 30 min drive away from Lisbon but it feels like you entered a new world. Instead of buildings, you’ll see natural landscapes, majestic mountains and of course – some spectacular beaches. Praia da Ursa is one of them. It’s a bit tricky to get there, which is perhaps why it’s one of the most preserved beaches in Portugal. You have to go to Sintra National Park, follow the signs saying “Praia da Ursa” and start the hike down. It’s very important to note that the hike down isn’t for the faint hearted. It takes about 1 hour, or more depending on how fast you hike, to get down to the beach. But once there, you’ll be mind blown. This little hidden beach is wild, gorgeous and has some stunning rock formations. Just remember to bring lots of water and some snacks because there’s no facilities on this beach.
Costa da Caparica
A bit easier to get to if you’re in Lisbon. Take the bus across the bridge and jump off a few stops afterwards. Walk down to the Costa da Caparica coastline and choose a spot. The beach is big and stretches for several kilometres, so if you’re looking for a secluded place, you’ll surely find one hidden spot here. The beach is perfect for surfing as well and there’s plenty of surfing schools that can offer you lessons. There’s some restaurants on the beach as well.
Ribeira do Cavalo
This lovely and popular beach in Sesimbra offers some calmer waters so you can swim as much as you want to. You can either take a motor boat to get to the beach or you can hike from the parking lot. The hike should take about 45 minutes. The closer you get to the beach, the more stunning the views become. Ribeira do Cavalo has white sand and turquoise water, making it the picture perfect beach. There’s no facilities on this beach so you need to bring everything with you such as water and food.
Praia do Camilo
No list is complete without including one beach in Algarve, south of Portugal. But there’s one particular that stands out and that’s praia do camilo. You can either walk to the beach from the city centre of Lagos or take the car there. It’s one of the most popular beaches in the area and gets especially full during summer. The best time to go to Lagos is after summer or just before, when summer vacation hasn’t started yet.
